In 1980 he took up the full-time appointment of Resident Brass Specialist at Giggleswick School, North Yorkshire before moving to his current position as Head of Brass & Percussion at Bedford School in 1987. For twelve years he was a Boarding Housemaster at Bedford School.

In 1994 he joined the Brass Examiners’ Panel for the Guildhall School becoming Principal Examiner for six years in 2000. He now examines all instrumental disciplines for Trinity College, London.
